Amounts

How much you get

Fixed incentive per project, set by equipment category, building type (single-family home, or an apartment or single-family home under 1,000 sq ft), whether the home is in a state-designated Disadvantaged Community (DAC), and whether it qualifies for the Weatherized Tier (built after 2010, past participation in an approved weatherization program, or a low measured heating load). The amount depends on which of these fits your install.

Eligibility

Do I qualify?

You need to meet all 7 of these.

  • Each dwelling unit must be owned or controlled by a National Grid electric customer with an active account that pays the System Benefits Charge. National Grid gas-only customers don't qualify.

  • Existing 1-4 unit homes, or one to four complete apartments in a larger building whose owners don't control the whole building. New construction qualifies only for ground-source heat pumps.

  • The system must be installed by a NYS Clean Heat participating contractor, who applies for the incentive.

  • The heat pump system must be sized to meet the full heating load of the home (or of the apartments in the project). Installing new fossil fuel heating equipment alongside it is not allowed.

  • Not available for a dwelling unit that already received NYS Clean Heat incentives for full-load electrification. Homes that earlier received partial-load incentives can still apply for full-load incentives.

  • The higher Disadvantaged Community (DAC) amounts apply only to homes inside a state-designated DAC; check the address on NYSERDA's Disadvantaged Communities map.

  • The higher Weatherized Tier amounts need a home built in 2011 or later, past participation in an approved weatherization program (for National Grid, Total Home Comfort with attic or roof insulation; or NYSERDA Comfort Home packages A, B or C), or a building heating load per square foot below the program standard.

What to doWeatherize first (for example through NYSERDA Comfort Home) or ask your contractor whether the home meets the Performance Pathway heating-load standard.

Equipment

What equipment counts

The program sets these minimums.

  • Cold-climate air-source heat pump listed on, or meeting the criteria of, the NEEP Cold Climate Product List; air-to-water heat pumps must be on the NYS Clean Heat AWHP Eligible Products List.

  • Each heat pump must meet or exceed the ENERGY STAR Geothermal Heat Pump specification and the system must meet 100% of the load at design conditions.

  • System must satisfy at least 100% of the building heating load of the project scope at design conditions; systems sized over 120% may need extra review.

Applying

How to apply

Your contractor applies for you.

  1. Check your address.

Confirm you're a National Grid electric customer and check NYSERDA's Disadvantaged Communities map for the higher DAC amounts.

  2. Hire a NYS Clean Heat participating contractor.

The contractor runs a Manual J load calculation, designs a full-load system and quotes the price with the incentive.

Get a quote from a contractor

  3. Install the system.

For the decommissioning incentive the old fossil fuel heating system must be fully removed from service, with a decommissioning checklist.

  4. Contractor submits the application.

The contractor applies through the NYS Clean Heat portal after installation.

  5. Receive the incentive.

Either as an instant discount on the contractor's invoice, or as a check mailed after installation, depending on the contractor.

FAQ

Questions

How much does NYS Clean Heat heat pump incentives (National Grid) pay?

$100 to $28,000, depending on what you install. The table under How much you get lists each amount.

Do I need to be a Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation customer?

Yes. It’s only for homes in Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation customers, New York. See Do I qualify for the details.

Do I have to use a contractor?

Yes. The system must be installed by a NYS Clean Heat participating contractor, who applies for the incentive.

Do I need approval before I buy?

The higher Weatherized Tier amounts need a home built in 2011 or later, past participation in an approved weatherization program (for National Grid, Total Home Comfort with attic or roof insulation; or NYSERDA Comfort Home packages A, B or C), or a building heating load per square foot below the program standard. Weatherize first (for example through NYSERDA Comfort Home) or ask your contractor whether the home meets the Performance Pathway heating-load standard.

Can I combine it with other rebates?

Yes, with National Grid Heat Pump Water Heater Rebate (NYS Clean Heat). See Use it with.

Is it still available?

Yes. It was open when we last checked, on October 26, 2026.

Do I have to remove my old furnace or boiler?

No, but you get more if you do. Projects that decommission the old fossil fuel heating system qualify for the higher decommissioning incentive; a completed decommissioning checklist must go in with the application.

Can I get the incentive if I already have a small heat pump?

Yes. Adding heat pump capacity to an existing partial-load system to reach full load qualifies for the partial-to-full-load incentive, and homes that earlier got partial-load Clean Heat incentives can apply for full-load incentives.
