Residential Energy Storage Incentive

Run by NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority)

NYSERDA pays a per-kWh incentive, through a participating contractor, for a home battery up to 25 kWh, standalone or paired with solar. A higher Inclusive Storage Incentive is available in disadvantaged communities and for households under 80% of median income.

Amounts

How much you get

A fixed $/kWh rate times the battery's usable capacity, for up to 25 kWh. The rate depends on your region and the MWh block open when your contractor submits a complete application, and is shown only on NYSERDA's Residential Energy Storage Incentive Dashboard. The Inclusive Storage Incentive is a separate, higher-than-market-rate statewide block; a project gets one or the other, not both. The incentive is paid to the contractor.

Eligibility

Do I qualify?

You need to meet all 6 of these.

  • Incentives go through a NYSERDA-approved Residential Energy Storage participating contractor, who contracts with you and applies.

What to doHire a contractor approved under NYSERDA's Residential and Retail Energy Storage Incentive program.

  • The application must be submitted before the system is interconnected to the grid; systems connected before applying don't qualify.

What to doMake sure your contractor submits the NYSERDA application before the battery is interconnected.

  • New, grid-connected, behind-the-meter battery with a minimum 10-year warranty (purchased systems), UL-listed, placed in service by December 31, 2030.

  • After installation the battery must enroll in a qualifying utility load-management program where one is available (National Grid ConnectedSolutions, NYSEG/RG&E Energy Storage Solutions, O&R Smart Savers).

What to doEnroll the battery in your utility's qualifying battery or demand-response program after installation.

  • Inclusive Storage Incentive only: the project is in a Disadvantaged Community census tract, or serves an owner-occupied primary residence with household income under 80% of AMI or SMI, whichever is higher (or a categorical eligibility program), or a 1-4 unit affordable housing property.

  • PSEG Long Island customers use a separate Long Island single-family storage incentive governed by the NY-Sun manual.
