FAQ

Questions

How much does Home Efficiency Rebates (HER), Georgia's Home Energy Rebates pay?

Up to $16,000.

Do renters qualify?

The home must be your primary residence in Georgia. Homeowners can apply; tenants can take part with written permission from the building owner. If you rent, get the landlord's written permission (Landlord Authorization Form).

Do I have to use a contractor?

Yes. Every HER project must be led by a program-approved contractor, who completes the work and receives the rebate.

Do I need approval before I buy?

Yes. Apply before you buy or install anything; purchases made first don’t qualify. The project must be modeled to save at least 20% of the home's energy use (windows alone won't get there). Have a program-approved contractor do a home energy assessment and plan a project that reaches at least 20% modeled savings.

Can I combine it with other rebates?

Is it still available?

Yes. It was open when we last checked, on October 27, 2026.

Will I be taxed on the rebate?

No. GEFA says the rebate is treated as a reduction in the purchase price, so you don't report it as income.

Can I get a rebate for work I already did?

Sometimes. HER allows retroactive rebates only for projects that meet DOE's retroactivity rules, including a home assessment before installation showing at least 20% savings and a program-approved contractor.

Can I apply on paper?

No. All applications go through the online portal and must be started by a program-approved contractor.

Can windows qualify?

Only as part of a larger HER project. Replacing windows alone won't reach the required 20% energy savings.
